Sculpture and Symbols

My freestanding and relief sculptures take their physical form from mud brick and adobe structures I saw while living in the Middle East and visiting New Mexico. The walls stand up like barriers which the viewer can walk around or visually pass to the other side through the door and window openings. After I build the walls and reliefs, I carve and paint the masonry surfaces with images and symbols which relate to ancient wall paintings and rock carvings.

I am fascinated with the way the ancient carving communicate through time, even if it is not possible to understand the original meanings exactly. Recently, I have begun to use increasingly animated and personal carvings and images. The glass beads on the surface reflect direct light in the same way the lines on the roadway do when seen by headlights in a car. They also give the surface a pleasing, rough quality, and appear to intensify the underlying color when light is reflected back to the viewer. The light reflections sparkle and change as the viewer moves around the sculpture. I have always been interested in the contrast between light and shadow. These glass beads increase the range of value beyond what is achievable with cast shadows and pigment alone, and make the surface lively.
